This is one of those ALSO events where you need to suspend disbelief and immerse yourself in the experience (irresistible pun).
As evidence of the benefits of wild swimming for our health and wellbeing grows, we offer you three different wild swimming experiences from the comfort of your own home.
Here’s the science.
We (and many other mammals) have what is known as the mammalian diving reflex. It’s a hard-wired physiological response to immersion in cold water. When triggered, our heart rate slows and blood is redirected towards our core.
Fortunately for us you don’t need to be fully immersed to enjoy the calming benefits of these physiological changes. The reflex is triggered when the cold water hits our face and in particular the area just below our eyes and the nostrils.
So run the cold tap, take a deep breath and splash the water over your face. Do that a couple of times, sit down, relax and take a dip.
